THE TRADITIONAL OF A YAMANAKACraftsman in Yamanaka
Lacquerware is made by a division of labour among craftsmen. The high level of skill and experience of the woodworkers, underglazers, painters and makie artists has been passed on to the next generation of high-quality craftspeople.
In the Yamanaka Lacquerware Cooperative Association, craftsmen in each process have deepened their craftsmanship by sharing their skills, knowledge and experience acquired through daily training with each other. Respect for tradition and flexible creativity, such as the sublimation of wooden lacquerware techniques into modern lacquerware, continue to produce a large number of Yamanaka lacquerware today.
